Venue History: Dromoland Estate came into being in the 16th century, after the Cromwellian wars. Some 3,000 castles some mere rocky ruins remain today as reminders of this period.
Dromoland was the ancestral home of the OBrien clan, the Barons of Inchiquin, one of the few native Gaelic families of royal Irish blood, and direct descendants of Brian Boru, High King of Ireland in the 11th century.
Dromoland Castle remained in the hands of the OBriens until 1962.
Family ties have not been completely broken, however. The 18th Baron of Inchiquin, Conor Myles John O'Brien, who can trace his ancestry back to Brian Boru, still lives on the estate in Thomond House, a Georgian-style manor.
The Castle's noble past is graciously presented in all public rooms, which feature magnificent wood and stone carvings, hand-carved paneling, original oil paintings, oriental carpets, damask window draperies, and Irish heirloom antique furnishings. Public areas feature a wall fabric of a documented design from the late 17th century
