Venue History: The Tower was originally built in 1494 as part of the fortifications for Portsmouth and was home to the Governor of Portsmouth.

Around 1584 it was converted into a store for gunpowder but in 1642, during the English Civil War the town's governor threatened to blow up the gunpowder in the Square Tower which would have destroyed half of the town so the gunpowder was relocated and in 1779 the tower then became home to The Royal Navy's meat store.

It was used as a meat store until the 1850's when it was moved to a new home in Gosport. During the 20th Century the Square Tower was manned during the two world wars and was also used by sea scouts and harbour pilots

In 1635 Portsmouth was presented with a gilded lead bust of King Charles I to commemorate his safe return to England from abroad in 1623.

A copy of the commemorative bust was set into the outside wall of the tower can still be seen there today, the original bust can be viewed at Portsmouth City Museum. The King Charles I Bust is Portsmouth's oldest public monument.

The Tower was restored to it's present condition between 1979 and 1986. An archaeological examination revealed centuries-old features such as windows and fireplaces which are all visible today.
