Venue History: Pendley Manor s history dates back to the Doomsday Book. The original Pendley Manor house was owned by William the Conqueror but was passed over to his brother-in-law, Earl Moreton.

The Manor passed through various hands including John de Angle MP, John de Haye and Whittingham. Four generations of the very famous Verney family lived at Pendley Manor over a period of 150 years. The Verney family sold the house to the Anderson family who also saw four generations live happily in it. After the death of the last Anderson heir, the Manor was inherited by the Anderson s daughter, a Harcourt.

Sadly, in 1847 the Manor burnt more or less to the ground. The Harcourt family demolished the ruins and auctioned the site.

In 1872, Joseph Grout Williams, a mill owner and wealthy land owner commissioned the architect, John Lion to build a new country house. It was designed to reflect the interests of the Williams family, namely with flora and fauna. The appearance of an ancient Victorian Manor was also important to them and thus the building today stands as a testimony to the William family s ideals.

The Williams family moved into the Manor in 1875 and the Pendley Manor was lived in as a private family house until just after the Second World War. The last member of the family to live in the house, Dorian Williams, then opened up the house for adult education courses such as water colour painting.

Dorian Williams was a keen equestrian and he worked as a commentator for the BBC and his wonderful voice was often heard commentating at events such as the Horse of the Year Show . His portrait can now be seen in the Dorian room. He was also a scholar and enthusiast of Shakespeare and it was he that started the annual Pendley Manor Open Air Shakespeare Festival over fifty years ago, which has taken place every year during the first two weeks of August in the Manors grounds.

The Pendley Manor was still a family home until 1983 when Dorian Williams sold the Manor to the Grass Roots Company. Then in 1987, Craydawn Limited, an independent company, embarked upon a two year restoration of the historic Manor.

In 1989, the Pendley Manor opened as a 24 bedroom hotel, allowing guests once again to revel in the elegance and beauty of a bygone era. In June 1991, the Harcourt extension was completed offering a further 47 bedrooms, 6 conference rooms and an elegant ballroom. A further 3 bedrooms, an indoor leisure club and a coffee shop were added 10 years later. This has created a hotel and conference centre that boasts diverse facilities within a stunning rural setting. The manor has renowned popularity for Weddings, Conferences, Meetings, Private Banquets and Leisure Break Weekends.
