Venue History: The Edinburgh Corn Exchange is a Grade A listed building that has played a major role in Edinburgh's history. Formerly the citys leading cattle-market the Corn Exchange was a central meeting and trading place for Scottish Farmers. The market was opened on 23 June 1910 by The Right Hon. The Earl of Rosebery K.G., K.T.
The Corn Exchange was easily accessible via Gorgie East train station, located to the north of Slateford road. This station was operational between 1884 and 1962, and formerly served the Gorgie cattle-market.
In November 1971 the North British Hereford Breeders Association were given permission to use the premises for the first time for the trade of Hereford bulls. At this time cattle were bought and sold under Edinburgh Corn Market's roll of honour memorial, which is still in place in the Exchange today.
The Corn Exchange was bought by the De Marco family in 1997 and within the last few years, the venue has been restored to its former glory and thus created the largest and most versatile venue in Edinburgh. Many of the original features remain combining a sense of history alongside today's more modern and contemporary styles. A perfect blend of the old and the new!
