University of Wales Lampeter :-
St David's College was founded by Bishop Thomas Burgess in 1822 and admitted its first students on St David's Day in 1827. The University is one of the oldest such institutions in Britain, receiving its first charter in 1828 and pre-dated only by the ancient universities of Oxford, Cambridge and Scotland. For more than a century it was an independent degree awarding college, offering a range of courses, but maintaining a close relationship with the church. In the 1960s it formed links with the University of Wales and became eligible for full HM Treasury support. In 1971 it became a constituent institution of the University of Wales with the title St. David's University College. In 1996 the Privy Council - in response to a petition from the University - agreed to change its title to the University of Wales Lampeter in line with moves elsewhere in the University and the recognition of its growth and changing status.
