Venue special features: There is a fairytale quality to Bolsover Castle; highlights include the sumptously painted walls and ceilings of the fantasy Little Castle, intricately carved fireplaces and the magnificent 17th century Riding House. The Venus Fountain plays in the Garden of Love, a sheltered walled space perfect for drinks, or even the marriage ceremony; and the views across the valley from the Terrace are astounding.
Venue History: Bolsover Castle was built by the Cavendish family in the 17th century on the site of a ruined Norman castle. It comprises the Little Castle, conveived by Charles Cavendish as a small retreat for pleasure and entertainment, and later embellished and completed by his son William (later the first Duke of Newcastle) as an allegorical journey from earthly concerns to heavenly delights. William also added the vast and stately Terrace Range overlooking the Vale of Scarsdale, now a dramatic and roofless shell, inviting King Charles I and his court to Love's Welcome to Bolsover, a masque specially written by Ben Jonson for the visit and performed in the Garden of Love. Finally William constructed the Riding House with its magnificent roof and viewing gallery, among the finest surviving indoor riding houses in the country and a landmark in British equestrianism.
