As photographers we often don't get enough time to undertake massive personal challenges like this because of the nature of working for ourselves. Even fitting in the elusive personal work and portfolio development can be difficult sometimes, although recently Alan has been finding time through his participation in the 'Mentor Me on Steroids' programme offered by Damian McGillicuddy. "A lot of the tasks that Damian sets me I consider personal work, but they still tend to be things that will develop my business further."

"It's been very important for my business to be on a mentorship programme, especially because you can spend so much time working alone. I was also very frustrated that I couldn't find the knowledge that I desired to develop my technique to become a better photographer.

I didn't want to be someone who was just good enough, I really want to learn the craft properly." The solution for Alan was to find someone who knew the business of photography inside out, having already been in the industry for a long time. It was also important to Alan to find someone who had run a similar kind of social photography business to the one that he himself has. "What I've mostly been doing with Damian is making sure that I build up my creativity and my skills with a camera so that I can produce better, higher-quality images for my clients. I'd also like to be able to go after more qualifications in the future which require much higher levels of creativity".

Upselling using ProSelect

At the Societies' Convention 2014 Alan presented a Masterclass on ProSelect portrait studio software. 'ProSelect is one of the best investments I made in my business at an early stage. It's so much better for showing clients work than using software like Lightroom or Bridge'. As always the devil is in the detail and ProSelect allows Alan to help clients visualise what their images will look like in different frames and even different groupings. 'The methods that I use allow me to get the clients to engage with the sale and really think about the products. More often than not I have clients buying more products than those they were talking about when they left the studio from their initial sitting'.
