Who today is leading the way in creative social photography and why?
Jerry Ghionis is always showing up on my social feeds. He has so much energy to teach and inspire others. I love that he continues to give back to the photography industry, encourages others to strive for excellence and continues to be a very approachable individual.
If you could pick just FIVE seminars (other than your own of course!) to attend at The Societies of Photographers Convention whose workshops would you attend?
Why can’t I pick mine? Those sessions will ROCK! ALRIGHT, so here are my five that I most likely will be attending (remember, I am never done learning):
1) 1, 2, 3, InDesign! with Khara Plicanic
2) Secrets of Luxury Branding your Wedding Business with Scott Robert Lim
3) Go for No! The Psychology of Sales with Melanie Anderson
4) Print for Profit - Sales is Not a Dirty Word with Martin Baynes & Jeremy Price
5) Better Album and Wall Art Sales Through the Power of Storytelling with Andrew Funderburg
What do you think will be the next big thing in the industry?
The industry will continue to bring technology to the hands of everyone. People will be able to take photographs with a click of a button and have it look as good as a professional’s photograph. True understanding of photography will continue to erode, as technology “fixes” deficiencies behind the scenes. We are NOT doomed. Educate your clients to show what you are what creates the image, not the technology.
Would you want your own children to take up the reins of your empire (or have they)?
Although they have grown up with photography, and seen the hard work involved, they are doing their own thing. All are exceptionally smart and off to change the world in their fields of study. My oldest son, Henry, is getting his graduate degree in Immunobiology from the University of Bonn (Germany), my daughter, Hannah, is in her Junior year of college and is planning on attending dental school. My other daughter, Lara, is a Sophomore in college and is showing off her business skills (maybe she WAS listening all these years!!?). My youngest son, Ryan, still helps out with sessions, but wants to also head off to college and become a dentist. Overall, I am impressed with what they have accomplished already and can only expect great things from all of them.
Your plans for the next five years?
I could quote Madonna and say “To Rule the World” but that would be so cliche. I just want to continue to have a thriving business where people are excited to have their photos taken by me. I also get to travel a bit more and am stoked to see more of the world with my wife.
