Why is The Societies of Photographers Convention such a big deal for photographers?
It’s going to be my first time attending so it’s hard to say, but I am very excited to find out.
Is it primarily about the chance to learn from the experiences of imaging icons?
Not primarily. The icons of the industry are a great resource, but I also tend to learn so much from other attendees over a pint or a meal. The type of photographer who takes the trouble to travel to events like this is more likely to be very serious about their craft and their business. Being around so many with that mindset is a powerful motivator and an incredible opportunity.
Your own mentors (living or dead)?
Mostly living. My parents, both wonderful photographers were probably the start of it. I have had too many to mention but luckily, for the most part, I can still pick up the phone and call almost all of them.
Who today is leading the way in creative social photography and why?
Lindsay Adler is one instructor creating great content that pushes the limits of photography. Photography on social media needs to do more to get noticed and she creates that type of work very well.
If you could pick just FIVE seminars (other than your own of course!) to attend at The Societies of Photographers Convention whose workshops would you attend?
Anything to do with business, marketing and social media. There are so many great classes, how could I choose?
What do you think will be the next big thing in the industry?
Video, video, video. As technology advances, still photography is going to merge more significantly with different types of video. I don’t believe photography will go away, but in order to survive, photographers will have to keep an open mind about the products and services they are willing to offer.
Would you want your own children to take up the reins of your empire (or have they)?
I want my children to have their own dreams. If there is an empire for them to take over, I would be delighted for them to do so. I also would be thrilled to see them carve another path out for themselves.
Your plans for the next five years?
Continue to grow our business and to take more of a managerial role. To grow a business that makes money even while I’m not the one shooting.
