Kate Hopewell-Smith Profile - You have to be quite tough to be a photographer - part 3 of 1 2 3

Kate's Masterclass at the Societies' Convention 2014 discussed composition and other intuitive skills and their use in creating artistic images that higher-end clients love to buy for their walls. 'Something I've learnt about couples is that they don't want a big headshot on their wall from the wedding. If they're going to frame an image then they want something dramatic and big, with themselves quite small in the frame.' This is where Kate believes that the non-technical skills come into their own: 'If you're going to learn to take those pictures well, you have to understand how an image is made. You have to be able to go onto location, under time pressures at a wedding and create something magic. And the only way to do that is to understand how to create an image with impact.'

I asked Kate what she hoped delegates took away from her Masterclass to apply to their own photography. 'The importance of understanding how to turn the 3D world into a 2D image cannot be underestimated, because that's what we do as photographers. There are a number of methods that are universally acknowledged to help in that process and we just have to know them to produce great images.'
