What’s the worst commercial error you have made to date?
Nothing comes to mind, thankfully.
Is it getting harder or easier to make a decent living?
It’s more important than ever to be running a solid business with targeted marketing and a written plan. I’m afraid that, if Brexit goes forward, it will have a big impact on the photography market. Many high-end earners will mostly likely move where the money is, which won’t be London anymore. Many big companies that employ these high earners will move, which also means any commercial photography that the companies commission will disappear. Photographers should be worried about this. I’ve already noticed cautious spending, even in the luxury market. This will only trickle down.
How do you stay ahead of the game?
Being prepared. Never resting on my laurels. Always moving forward. Solid business planning.
How do organisations such as The Societies of Photographers help?
The SWPP is a great resource for both new and established photographers.
Why is The Societies of Photographers Convention such a big deal for photographers?
The Convention provides a nice way to start the year: catching up with our peers who we are often too busy to see at any other time - especially ones from overseas.
Is it primarily about the chance to learn from the experiences of imaging icons?
When I was younger in my career, I found the Convention invaluable. I’ve been going since it was based in Coventry - which is a long time ago! I always came away with lots of new ideas and new friends, and usually having spent way too much money ;o)
Your own mentors (living or dead)?
I’ll always be grateful to the photographers who taught me early in my career. My first ever photography lesson after I came back from South America was with Ben Mitchell, a NY photographer friend of my parents. My teacher at Richmond College was a great photographer named Paul Duke. I also learned loads from Damien Lovegrove and Martin Graham Dunne.
There are 21 days to get ready for The Society of Photographers Convention and Trade Show at The Novotel London West, Hammersmith ...
which starts on Wednesday 15th January 2025
