What’s the worst commercial error you have made to date?
I paid for a listing in a Venue “magazine”. It was the one and only time I’ve paid for print advertising.
How did you rectify the mistake?
I didn’t do it again.
The lessons learnt?
Don’t always believe the sales pitch.
Is it getting harder or easier to make a decent living?
I think generally it’s getting harder. But this isn’t anything to do with the amount of photographers; in my experience I’m already seeing people hold back booking because they are worried about the Brexit affect. I, myself, and reticent to take bookings for 2019 at the moment because I don’t know if I’m going to suddenly need to find another 4% interest on my mortgage by then. As a country we are in a bit of financial pickle and I see that worry in the wedding market.
How do you stay ahead of the game?
I don’t try to do that. I just plod on doing the same stuff I’ve always done. I hope that my work is good enough to be recognised by brides who are interested in my style.
How do organisations such as The Societies of Photographers help?
They are great networking communities where you can get help on any topic from many photographers who have definitely “been there and done that”.
Why is The Societies of Photographers Convention such a big deal for photographers?
Not only is a it a great learning platform, but it’s a great place to simply mingle. Say hello to old friends, meet new ones and build new relationships with vendors.
Is it primarily about the chance to learn from the experiences of imaging icons?
It’s partly that, but the networking element is huge too,.
Your own mentors (living or dead)?
I don’t have mentors as such but I still look at the work of people such as Jeff Ascough as inspirational.
