Tell us a little about your background, your first camera and photographic experience and your subsequent emergence as a pro.

I got my first real camera at 17 - a Minolta Dynax film camera and I loved it. I went on to study fine art at college and then Photography in the Arts. I found that no matter what my work was I have always been drawn to the landscape and sea. This is especially prominent in my current work, which involves stunning wedding photography in previously unknown and remote locations in Scotland. There was a long natural progression to becoming a professional photographer and this became my main focus after my second son was born. Being a professional photographer has given me the freedom I need to enjoy my children and still be able to deliver enjoyable work.

Why photography?
Freedom of expression and the opportunity to bring pleasure to others.

Film or digital? Is there still a place for silver halide?
Digital all the way.

Which camera?
Nikon D800

Bit of detail about your own studio set-up/staffing. Why (as a customer) would I choose you?
I have worked since 2004 by myself from home with a brief interlude of being in a partnership and in a studio for one year. I learnt from that that I am a successful photographer who works best independently and thrives on being alone in the stunning surroundings of wild Scotland.

My work is unique in that I give people freedom to be themselves. I focus on producing images that reflect people and their surroundings equally. Couples have an advantage when they use me because they are getting someone who is not only a wedding photographer but also an award winning landscape photographer.

The problem with professional photographers today is?
They try to conform and are looking outwards to others instead of inwards and developing their own style.

What’s the worst commercial error you have made to date?
I took on a wedding - the only wedding where I have had a complaint; I felt at the time of booking something was amiss. The fit wasn’t right and there was something amiss with the family. In retrospect I should have followed my instinct.
