'I always wanted to own a business that was an employer of people,' Stuart tells me thoughtfully. 'Although I love taking pictures, I also really enjoy the challenge of owning and running a business, being an employer and investing in talent.' Running a 'general practice' photography studio allows Stuart to also ensure that all staff receive training in as many aspects of the business as possible. A member of his staff could find themselves photographing a family portrait, manning the busy reception desk or retouching images all in the same day. 'I always look for people with skills that are transferable within the business when I'm hiring. It's great to have people with a range of talents who can manage anything you throw at them.'
It all started when Stuart fell in love with photography at college. He was initially disillusioned with the photography industry and its lack of jobs but a chance meeting with Stuart Wood, now an SWPP Fellow, opened the doors for five years of assisting work. 'So few people now are prepared to go down the assisting route,' Stuart tells me. 'We live in an age of instant expertise and so I feel quite privileged to have had a long, slow apprenticeship that taught me all the techniques and skills that I would need to become a successful photographer.'
