It was a hard decision for Steve to stop entering competitions himself and begin judging. 'I miss entering the competitions, but I prefer not to both enter competitions and be involved with the judging. Of course we can stand aside and not judge particular categories, but the categories I enjoy judging the most are the ones I would want to enter!' It's not all that bad though; 'I get as much out of judging as I used to get out of entering competitions. I never tire of looking at images of any kind.'
Steve currently holds five Fellowship qualifications, but surprisingly he doesn't hold a Fellowship in the categories he enjoys judging the most - travel and wildlife. 'This Convention I'm trying to remedy that by entering a Fellowship panel in each of those categories so that I feel better qualified to judge.' But it's not always a case of having the right qualification - Steve believes that judging is an intuitive process; 'Usually you can look at a picture and decide within the first few seconds if it's a good competition image or not. Of course you then look at the details of the image before making a final decision, but some really do stand out for you.' It should be an exciting Convention for Steve this January - and no doubt the judging rooms will be crowded for those two panels!
