Terry Donnelly won the Societies' 16x20 competiton at Convention 2015 with a greatly admired image titled 'We can work it out'. He also gained our Associate qualification to add to the great many he has already collected in other spheres. His associateship submission was shown in the last issue of Professional Imagemaker but it was always planned to interview him and talk about his highly stylised approach that has been so successful. Here then are his own words told to editor, Mike McNamee.

Tell me a little about your background and how you started in photography.
I have been into photography since I was a child. I would collect cameras, dismantle them to see how they worked, and run the occasional roll of film through. As a teenager I got hold of a Canon 35mm SLR, with a 50mm prime lens. I'd shoot film and develop it at home and occasionally make prints.

When I left school at 15 the photography pretty much got put on the back burner. I still loved using a camera on special occasions or holidays, but the interest, that I had previously, had become less intense. Then in 2006, I became involved commercially in supplying photographs to the construction industry and my interest in photography returned. This work also gave me my first introduction to Photoshop.

Two years later, in 2008, I sold this business, and I was left looking to what I would do next photographically. I discovered a photography course run by The Open University, T189. It was a 12-week course and the points earned from a pass would count towards that degree I've been doing for the last 20 years!

On completion of the course I was recommended to consider applying for LRPS. I was awarded LRPS later in 2008 and ARPS in The Visual Arts category in 2010.
