The Next Step

Constantly aware that it can be dangerous in the photography business to stand still for too long, David is looking to the future and making plans for where he wants his business to go next. "I've worked very long hours in my business for many years," he says, "and I'm trying to streamline things in the future so that I can have some free time. Recently, I've stopped shooting weddings and want to concentrate on a few different styles of portraiture. Over the past few years, we've developed our Maternity and Early Days sessions alongside Makeovers and, more recently, we've moved into Boudoir photography.

"We now outsource all retouching, printing and framing so I can concentrate on the photography and marketing of the business. My plan by the end of the year is to work only four days per week, something that my wife doesn't believe will ever happen! I love this so-called job we do; every day is a new challenge and it certainly beats digging ditches."

A long-time member of the SWPP, David always looks forward to Convention time, and relishes the chance to meet photographers from all over the world and to share ideas. "I firmly believe that the competition we face in this business is not just from other photographers but from travel agents, jewellers, fashion shops and anyone else who separates the public from their disposable income," he says. "Consequently we need to help each other, especially in the current financial climate. I'm personally a member of a national marketing group where like-minded photographers meet every six weeks to share their best ideas, so that we can all improve our businesses. I think more of the SWPP members should get together locally and do something similar, so that everyone benefits from the shared knowledge."

David has spoken several times previously at the Convention, and his workshop for the 2014 event will be focusing on what he calls 'The Bump to Baby Business.' "I'll be trying to make the seminar an easy guide to how to master this part of the market," he says. "I'll be covering everything you need to know about maternity sessions and newborn photography, from the equipment and studio conditions through to posing and marketing. Previous attendees have stated that I make it easy to understand and I helped them to make money from this lucrative market, and that's what I'll be looking to do again in this session."
