Lenses
Nikon simultaneously launched a group of new specialist lenses. A PC-E 45mm F2.8 joins the PC-E 24mmf2.8 Perspective control lens and the specification of the 85mm PC lens is also confirmed. The final lens of the group is a 60mm Micro Nikkor f2.8. We have been doing clever things with the perspective control Nikkors and will report next issue.
SB 900 Flash Gun
A new flash the SB 900 joins the Creative Lighting line-up. The gun was given an impressive public test in the theatre at the launch, shooting from the back of the auditorium, to the stage. The changes are not mouldbreaking, but some simplifications have been made to the operation, along with a boost in absolute power and an increase in the zooming range. The numbers now stand at a GN of 13 at 12mm focal length, peaking at 58GN at 135mm focal length. The coloured gel system now automatically recognises a gel that has been inserted (they are used for light balancing). More interesting is an ability to shape the output so that 'centre weighted' produces a pronounced pool of light, through 'standard' (like an SB800) to 'Even', which creates more even lighting than normal.
Overall Thoughts
Overall then an interesting set of additions which should be in the shops by the time you read this. We anticipate a full review as soon as models become available.
