This created a profile worth auditing and the result was an average error of 1.67ΔE00, not quite the very best that we achieved in PermaJet Ultra Gloss Canvas but a good second place even so. Not that it is that relevant, but the target also passed the Fogra V3 international contract proof standard. All the statistics were excellent including the HiGAM patch set. The gloss finish gives the prints and targets a high level of punch right out of the box!

The highlights remained detectable up to 249 RGB points, the shadows down to 25 RGB points. The Granger Chart was very smooth as was the grey ramp. The Dmax was an excellent 1.97 and the CII was 1.83ΔE00.

Real Prints

We printed the poppies once again to create a good-looking print with lots of saturation. The improved saturation of the gloss finish is confirmed by the very low value for ΔC/w, the weighted error in chroma. If the image was to be displayed in a protected frame, no further varnish treatment would be needed.

Economy 800 Canvas

The Economy 800 canvas is marketed as being suitable for 'decor only', that infers that while it is Ok on quality, the presence of OBAs rules it out of the fine art world and differentiates it from its companions. In the audit tests it was always a couple of fractional points behind the Lyve canvas and it does seem that the more expensive product has a very slight edge. Even so this was no mean performer and the high OBA loading gave it plenty of zip for real prints. After varnishing the audit delivered an average error of 3.17 across the entire patch set. The baseline statistics are tabled:

The effect of varnishing was to lower the luminance all round, the error pattern went from 1.97 too light through to 1.65 units too dark. The saturation error moved from -1.32 (desaturated) to -0.34 (only just desaturated). The errors in the HiGAM tones moved in a similar manner.

Real Prints

In line with the sparky appearance of this media we chose a sport shot to show it off. In this polo shot (from the sport section of this issue) the shadow detail in the ponies' chest was well rendered and the fine detail around the ponies' nostrils were bitingly sharp. Once again varnishing brought up the colours all round.
