Jerry Ghionis' Ice Light 2
With mid-May UK availability being suggested at the time of writing, also available via Westcott is the second generation of the Ice Light - the Ice Light 2 - devised by esteemed pro photographer, Jerry Ghionis. The new Ice Light is claimed to be 50% brighter than the original, offering 1,740 lumens of daylight-balanced output whilst maintaining a compact housing. Being an LED, it is flicker free, while a new removable lithium ion battery provides 60+ minutes of run time at full power. Replacement batteries are said to be 'affordable'. It also claims to reveal natural colours, skin tones and hues in use, thus avoiding lending any colour cast to the image. Also, unlike traditional LED panels, the Ice Light has a built-in diffuser designed to protect the LEDs and provide an expansive 73-degree beam angle, spreading soft light over a vast surface area. Undoubtedly one of the biggest advantages of the Ice Light, however, is that it has been designed to be very portable. Weighing a mere 20 ounces, the Ice Light 2 can be easily operated with one hand, according to its makers, giving photographers and film-makers the ability to simultaneously shoot and light their subjects. Alternatively there is a thread for tripod mounting.

The Flash Centre & Elinchrom ELB 400
Looking for lighting hardware that is strong, reliable, portable yet powerful? New from lighting experts, The Flash Centre, is the Swissmanufactured Elinchrom ELB 400 system, which is described as the evolution of the popular Quadra Hybrid. The idea here is this portable lithium ion pack is designed for photographers who like to travel but pack enough power to overpower the sun. A built-in Skyport system is said to allow seamless synchronisation between your camera and the ELD 400. An OLED display is included for quick access to all its features. The new model is also said to feature a 20% faster recycling time and deliver 25% more from the same weight of pack (2kg, and delivering 350 full power flashes). Pack dimensions are 18.5x15x8.5cm.

Added to this the palm-sized (9x8x11cm) Quadra Pro branded flash heads are said to deliver a full-sized performance, and are backwards and forwards compatible with the Elinchrom system; alternatively there is the choice of Quadra Action heads when flash duration is crucial and you want to freeze the motion of your subject. The Quadra heads offer interchangeable flash cables, plug-in flash tube and at just 0.28kg, the heads are as lightweight as they are compact for convenience and portability. Either buy the ELB 400 pack on its own for £869 inc VAT, or choose from one or two head ELB 400 kits, which adds on either the Action or the Pro heads. One head Pro kits start at £1,409, progressing to £2,039 for an ELB 4000 set with two Action heads also included.
