It was a joy to see my own organisation working so hard there in designated areas to bring food distribution, healthcare programmes and taking the message of forgiveness and reconciliation to this war-torn land and its peoples.
I was to return five months later to Rwanda itself when the refugees returned to their own country.
Many were the invitations I received to speak on my experiences following that particular assignment. I discovered that once I had spoken on one radio programme, invitations followed from others. Requests to speak at Rotary meetings, Probus Clubs, Inner Wheel, and yes, many have been the invitations to photographic societies and camera clubs. Each one I have accepted as an honour, and if my experience encourages someone in their hobby, work, or profession, then I am happy. I also see it as part of my work as director of exhibitions, for it is giving out information in another form.
Do I have a particular photographic category in which I would like to specialise? Yes I do! - in portraiture! Don't for one moment think that I am good at it, I am not.
I particularly loved the series of environmental portraits which Charles Green produced a couple of years back, they were exciting pictures, they told a story, and I am sure the subjects were thrilled with the results.
I love an evening in the studio endeavouring to be creative in lighting and, if possible, painting a portrait which will make the subject happy. If the person who is sitting for the portrait is happy, then, generally I am too.
