Overall
The bottom line to choosing one of the art papers is that they perform very well in both colour and monochrome and so you can choose on texture alone. For photographers, Rag Photographique is an obvious choice; for a bit of texture BFK is rightly popular and if you want more texture then head to Aquarelle or Velin. If you want a single good all rounder Edition Etching will fit; as claimed in the literature it just shades it in the whiteness stakes - useful perhaps for the bragging rights even if you might not detect it by eye!

The Canvas Media
We only looked at these four media and measured their basewhite properties. The two types are Museum Procanvas 385which is 100% pure cotton canvas and Photoart Procanvas395 which is a polycotton base. All are OBA free, waterresistant and available in both gloss and matt finishes. Theyare available in roll form only at 24", 26", and 44" wide.

The four are the most cream of the Canson media but evenso only a couple of points yellow from true neutral. Thelustre finish is very rich and produces sumptuous tonesacross the range.

For the record the matt finishes specify USFAP and Mk ink,the lustre specifies PLPP 360 and Pk ink.

AND FINALLY
By any standards this has been one of our more exhaustive series of tests, involvingdozens of test prints. The Canson range remains a firm favourite for its outstandingquality, its broad range of finishes and the mill's heritage in paper making. Theslight trimming down of the range since we last looked is hardly detrimental; closerelatives of papers only serve to confuse matters sometimes! The new canvas mediaare a nicely balanced set and the lustre is particularly attractive if you wish to avoidvarnishing your image. The general lack of OBAs across much of the range will makeit attractive to the discerning fine art printer.

We do not normally report on the longevity testing when we are paper testing. However, in view of the other features in this issue it is worth reiterating theimportance of print life. The absence of OBAs in most of the Canson papers is abonus for life. With Epson inks (in colour) Wilhelm reports up to 87 years exposureunder glass for Premium Gloss down to 45 years for Baryta Photographique. Thedark storage lives are all in excess of 250 years so you can use any Canson mediaand pass it down the generations with confidence. Using BHK Rives and the ABWdriver to create a monchrome would extend the lives yet further.
