Around Ireland With A Fred
I've a strong affection for the Emerald Isle. From it's music to it's scenery, but mainly because one of my best photographic friends, Larry McMahon, has invited me across to Dublin and Adare at regular intervals. The adventures of Tony Hawks were only a sub-text but give rise to the title of this article.
I was therefore delighted to be invited by The Societies to give a series of workshops on contemporary wedding and portrait photography. I was especially pleased to be working with my friend, Fredau Hoekstra, one of the finest models working in the UK at this time.
It was good to have a full mix of venues to work in, from an office block to a country house, modern hotel to industrial estate. In teaching sessions I try to put across the essential technical, business and social skills required of a wedding photographer and it is important to be able to use these in any setting, not just a fantastic castle. Those skills were truly put to a test on the last day of our tour!
After working around Dublin, Cork and Limerick our road-show rolled into Bangor, on the coast, near Belfast. It was a cold and stormy day when we arrived but there was still chance for a little shoot around the hotel just using natural light and light fittings.
A good meal that night and we were all set for the final day of our Irish odyssey.
There are 21 days to get ready for The Society of Photographers Convention and Trade Show at The Novotel London West, Hammersmith ...
which starts on Wednesday 15th January 2025
