I think it’s important to point something out here - the black area at the bottom of the image. Knowing your customer, and knowing how the image is going to be used is crucial to creating awesome work and building a good relationship with your customer. I knew that this image was going to be a full-page feature, with the bottom half of the image containing the text. When I created and planned the image, I did so with this in mind …and that is why you see a massive blank area at the bottom of the image.
A lot of looking at pictures of space and watching a few YouTube videos on creating nebula in Photoshop and I had my background ready!
Shooting the elements:
Now, this was the part that took the most time, and patience. I had a very clear image in my head before I shot a single frame, and that is crucial to creating something realistic that will harmonise compositionally. If I went into the shoot without a clear idea of what I wanted, I very well could have wasted everyone’s time and come away without anything that would work. Or, I could have finished the shoot and realised later that I hadn’t photographed something crucial to the image.
