In amongst all the economic turmoil Spicer Hallfield seem to have risen from the ashes, as the newly formed MTA Ltd. This is good news as it seems to show that there are some people who think that the wedding market has sufficient legs for them to invest their hard-earned cash. Competition is good for everybody, it keeps the producers leaner and fitter and it gives the purchasers more buying choices. At the other end of the workflow, Leaf and Phase One were joining forces, which left the Leaf AFi system looking vulnerable. Such is the pace of developments that Franke & Heidecke announced its closure (by September) between proofing these words and preparing them for final printing, leaving a complete loss of the present makers of the Rolleiflex brands. The demise of expensive products with a five-figure price tag sends shivers through many small operators, which is why they presumably are sticking close to the 35mm format DSLR, very few people actually need 56 million pixels anyway and often those who demand so many have little idea why! The development of an 'open' digital platform for medium format looks to be in tatters.
