Editorial - August-September 2008 - part 1 of 1

In preparation for the next magazine after this, I started to gather information on the subject of proofing. It was back in 2003 that Professional Imagemaker first covered the topic and the changes in the printing industry over the intervening five years are profound. PDF has come of age, Computer-to-Plate now rules and proofing standards have risen out of recognition. When you think about it, the changes to all digital imaging are equally great. As this is being written we are still under an NDA (Non-disclosure Agreement) regarding a new Nikon D700, a full-frame 12mp camera (see News section). Epson have launched a new group of printers some of which include 11 cartridges. With an additional green and orange, the gamut will certainly be even bigger than ever, scooping yet more Pantones into the printable proofing gamut and expanding the colour range for fine art reproduction. And we have not even got to Photokina yet!

Despite all this shiny new technology, the image remains key in our world, which is why it is so pleasing to see and publish our member's images. The idea of stringing the groom up in the way our cover photographer, John Edgar, did does not rely for a microsecond on the type of camera (it was a Canon D5 btw). It is all about thinking outside the box or in this instance outside the barn! Long may it be that way! How did he do it? No idea, but if you turn the magazine upside down the veins in the groom's head are standing out - I think she had strung him up; bit early in the marriage for that kind of thing.
