Editorial - June 2004 - part 1 of 1

by Mike McNamee Published 01/06/2004

We mention in our conclusions in the Kodak DCS Pro SLR/n this issue that the camera seems to be banging yet another nail into the coffin lid of film. In the Bureau of Freelance Photographers newsletter we also spot that Corbis have announced that, as of October, they will no longer be accepting transparencies for submissions to their library. The news item reports that file of 17MB (digitally captured) and 31MB (scanned) will be required for editorial submissions and 31MB (digitally captured) and 50MB (scanned) for advertising, fashion, and royalty free stock. This limits the 6M pixel cameras (typified by the Olympus E1, Nikon D100, Canon EOS 3000 and Fuji S2/3) to editorial. The only cameras that meet the 31MB digital capture are Canon 1DS, the Kodak DCS Pro SLRs, plus the "high end" medium format backs. We have had reports that the libraries do look at the exif data, so there is no point resizing up your files with SmartScale and its ilk! All of this opens up the possibility that the huge raft of Nikon D1 and D2 users who ply their trade for newspapers will never be able to place their images for stock use - we'll believe that when we see it.
