People who have not been involved with scientific research often imagine that the eggheads in white coats spend all their laboratory days shouting "Eureka" and dashing back to the office to run off a paper for Nature. Sadly this is not the case and the job can entail endless hours of grinding repetition punctuated only by the occasional Eureka moment. However we got our very own E-moment last month when we tested the new Adobe RAW on a Nikon D100. Following Adobe's instructions and making a few modifications to them, we got an image of quite breathtaking colour precision in about 20 seconds (see the review page 10, this issue for the detail). Those who knock digital take note - the colour is way ahead of the negscan-print route and once a bit more resolution becomes available there will be no sustainable reason to continue using film. The only downside seems to be the exposure latitude. While it is OK to bracket in the studio when using tranny such luxuries are not really available to the wedding photographer. With digital there is one basic rule- if you over expose you are dead in the water! We got the opportunity to test the "RAW" system in "battle" for a feature article to be run next issue (which also provided the front cover). With power and colour correcting ability like this there is no way we are going to shoot anything else from now on if it matters!
Apart from that, we at SWPP/BPPA trust that you are having a suitably hectic and profitable wedding season, we are working hard to provide you with yet more benefits of being a member. An exciting seminar season is well ahead in preparation and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible - it's good to talk
