Editorial - November-December 2005 - part 1 of 1

by Mike McNamee Published 01/11/2005

The photographic industry at large seems still to be suffering greatly. Agfa has joined some of the other giants going into administration and were followed, as we went to press, by the Sangers Group (former owners of Leeds Photovisual, currently owners of The Studio Workshop). Like all industries in the process of radical change, there are bound to be winners and losers, with most of the losers coming from companies unable to adapt to the speed of the change and the reduced time-to-production. In reality it is not a particularly good thing, this low time-to-production. The hectic rate of change means that, in say the computing world, the devices get ever quicker and more powerful, but seemingly, never better (ie longer lasting). At Professional Imagemaker we get through hard drives and CD drives so fast that we just rip them out and buy new ones - it is more hassle trying to get your money back on a CD drive than it is to pick up a new one; if you don't believe me try ringing Ebuyer!

On top of all this, Patrick Litchfield has gone off to the big studio in the sky. He will be missed most as an icon of the swinging 60s, running about with the likes of Bailey and Donovan and getting laid by all and sundry. He is the only really famous photographer I have ever sat down at the dinner table with, and he came across as a pretty decent, modest, sort of a guy. The trade will certainly miss his 'royal' endorsement of their products for he seemed to go out of his way to help when he could. Sixty six years young is a bit soon to go - and just as he was really getting his teeth into digital technology.

On a warmer note, this is the last issue before Christmas and the new year, so the very best to all our readers and members for a happy, healthy and prosperous 2006. See you at the Convention!
