We will return to the Convention for the next issue but now is the time when you should be browsing the website and deciding your itinerary (not forgetting any trade representatives and gear you might wish to look at). Some of the seminars are already booked out so saving it until the New Year is not the smart option, get onto it while there is time and before the Christmas rush starts!

Steve Jobs 1955-2011

Just as we finalised the layout, the sad news came through of the death of Steve Jobs. Regardless of your OS preferences, love him or hate him, Jobs (and co-worker Steve Wozniak) provided the world with a succession of game-changing concepts and equipment. Few areas of activity remain untouched by Apple and here is your editor's bit. In the early eighties we were struggling to increase the strength of materials used on (amongst other things) replacement hip and knee joints. Each microscopic digital analysis was taking days. The process was accelerated out of all recognition by the arrival of the first Mac in the middle eighties and the improvements remain in place today, when joint replacement is much more commonplace. Almost every research scientists will have a similar tale to tell. It is ironic that this page, which reports new ways of using an iPad, is the one we had to rearrange.
