Keeping on top of the latest fashions is also important, and GF Smith’s products are available in a range of contemporary colours - which extends to its choice of available frames. These are available in muted tones and greys, mirroring fashionable paint ranges from the likes of Farrow & Ball.

In terms of products worth your - and your customers’ - further investigation, GF Smith flags up its ‘Naturals’ frame. This is a photographic print mounted and laminated on MDF board to provide that contemporary look and finish.
“It’s a quality product at an amazing price,” Gail enthuses. “It’s really contemporary as it resembles a floating board on the wall.” It’s a product that does well for GF Smith and its photographer customers, as do its Expressions albums and standard albums too.
Fine art has been really big for the company and it is pushing forward with a matted album as well - products designed to help photographers differentiate themselves from the rest. “This is a digital album but it's got ‘mats’ on the top, so to all intents and purposes is a book-bound album, yet with the benefit of no added VAT. And we believe it will help differentiate you out there from someone shooting disk-only weddings. If a photographer’s wedding work is beautiful then we really do believe that there are people out there who will pay for and appreciate that. It’s just about finding your market.”
Aside from the Naturals frames, GF Smith is also offering some beautiful contemporary mouldings and has been keen to source materials that are a little bit different to the norm; again, it’s all about helping its photographers’ work to stand apart. “We're very aware the market is fashion driven and people want contemporary solutions in their homes, if they’re going to be putting them on the walls, rather than the traditional brown frames.”
Integrity and substance, GF Smith believes, are something your customers will feel worth paying for: “It can be classified as art, not just a photograph, and it’s something you’ll be putting on your wall for a long time,” reasons Gail, adding that all its products are made in-house - which is important in terms of not only being British made, but as regards quality control also. With Hull set to be crowned as City of Culture next year, GF Smith is placing itself at the forefront of delivering quality and value combined.
