Another recent 'evolution' of the GF Smith Photographic business is the introduction of its own rewards scheme. "We don't believe in heavily discounting," says Gail. "We believe strongly that we have a really good quality product at a fair price. So instead of giving out discounts we're inviting customers to join our rewards scheme. Just like every other rewards scheme, you join it and depending on what you've spent, at the end of the year we will give you a reward back. You can choose to give it to charity, or have it in a credit note, or as gift vouchers. We believe that's a better model for our customers and our business than simply plugging 'this month's offer'. "
Another important aspect to GF Smith Photographic is that it has sales reps out on the road, visiting photographers at their home or studio as desired. "It's a very tactile industry; people like to see and touch the product and we believe in building relationships. People buy from people, and we believe we are very approachable. We do all The Societies' Digital Imaging Shows and we're booked again for the Convention next January and The Photography Show; both very good for us. We've got a busy year ahead of us..."
Also offered to customers are factory tours of GF Smith's premises. Visitors are warmly welcomed. "We have lots of customers ask if they can come over and we're more than happy to show them the process of how an album gets made and all the different papers that we do. We encourage our staff to speak to people; if they're making an album for a customer it's very nice for them when they do meet that customer - so that's something we promote."
A visit is well worth it - if only to get the chance to witness your own album being hand made, the classic skill set near identical that of 100 years ago. All the work that the company puts out is also photographically printed. The machines may have changed but with GF Smith Photographic in essence it is the quality of a silver halide print that customers are getting. The message clearly is that quality is being retained at every level.
