Tell us a little about your background, your first camera and photographic experience and your subsequent emergence as a pro.
I started by teaching myself photography as a stay at home mom. I was going through infertility issues and I used learning photography as a distraction. Shortly after I learned how to use my camera, a friend asked me to help her with a boudoir shoot and I just fell in LOVE. I started a business very shortly after that out of my bedroom in my house.

Why photography?
Photography allows me to be creative, heal women and heal myself at the same time.

Film or digital? Is there still a place for silver halide?
I only shoot digital right now.

Which camera?
Nikon D3s and D750 but hoping to add the D850 soon.

Bit of detail about your own studio set-up/staffing. Why (as a customer) would I choose you?
I hope all my clients choose me because my vibe attracts them. I want a woman who is a little bit of a rebel, but needs a little kick in the pants. The marketing I do is more about my beliefs, feelings and life lessons than about the actual photos.

The problem with professional photographers today is...
They aren't vulnerable enough with their clients. They are more worried about the photos than the experience.

What’s the worst commercial error you have made to date?
Hmm… luckily I can't think of one!

Is it getting harder or easier to make a decent living?
For me, I believe I am always going to have to reinvent myself over and over to make a decent living. As long as you don't stay stagnant, you will always thrive.

How do you stay ahead of the game?
Just by being authentic and consistent in my message and spreading it.

How do organisations such as The Societies of Photographers help?
They give us a community. It's so easy to feel lonely and lost in this industry. To come together in person, be inspired and find your community is invaluable.

Why is The Societies of Photographers Convention such a big deal for photographers?
In person learning trumps online learning any day. To meet people in person, to learn from them, to ask your burning questions - it's a gift!

Is it primarily about the chance to learn from the experiences of imaging icons?
That is a huge part of it, but it's also about making connections, networking and finding people who can support you every day.

Your own mentors (living or dead)?
My mentors come from the business world mostly. Also artists like Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Madonna. Rebel women who keep reinventing themselves, staying relevant and pushing boundaries.

What do you think will be the next big thing in the industry?
I am seeing a large movement for photographer to uplift and support, to use our skills as gifts to those that need it including a lot of charity and volunteer work. I hope that continues.

Would you want your own children to take up the reins of your empire (or have they)?
Mine are still young, so I am not sure... I just hope they follow their dreams!

Your plans for the next five years?
In the next 5 years I hope to work more with women's empowerment both with my camera and without. I hope to spread the gifts that I have to more and more women, especially breast cancer survivors like me!
