Peter Ellis has been judging both competitions andqualifications for over 15 years. He has an absolutewealth of experience within The Societies, but alsohas experience with Kodak, the RPS, the MPA and theWPPI - amongst a whole host of others. "I believe it'san honour for an organisation to have enough faith inyou to ask you to judge and I'm happy judging all typesof photographic competitions, however, weddings andcommercial photography shots are my favourites asthey have a soft spot in my heart."But what is it that Peter really enjoys about judging competitions?'I just love looking at the variety of images and styles of thephotographs that are sent into the competition or qualifications.'And of course Peter is firmly in the camp of judges who believethat critiquing other photographers' work also helps them improve theirown; 'Looking at other people's work tells you to pull your finger outand push yourself more - which is always a good thing. If you hold aFellowship and you are a judge but you can't produce the goods, thenyou need to step back and push yourself more rather than sitting on yourlaurels. It doesn't help you or the images you are judging if you don't usethe experience to improve your own work too.'
Peter has also won numerous awards for his own images over the years, and sees entering competitions as an integral part of his business. 'It'svery important to enter competitions. They could be local, national, orinternational because it all helps you to develop your style. It also helps toshow your standing amongst your peers in this wonderful profession.' Buta win doesn't just mean celebrating on his own, Peter also likes to make areal fuss of his clients if they featured in a winning image; 'My clients loveto see themselves in a competition-winning image because they get tosee themselves in the local and sometimes national papers. Plus I alwaysmake a big fuss of them and present them with an image for themselvesor a bottle of champagne!'
