Passing on the knowledge

Having realised from the very start of his career the value of networking and continually talking to, and learning from, his peers within the business, Mike has been a long time member of the SWPP, joining in 2000. He's been actively involved in helping out at the Convention for many years, but next January will be the first time he's held his own workshop there, and he's looking forward to the experience.

The theme of the talk will be 'Working with Models: Where, How and the Safety of Everything,' and it ties in very much with Mike's principle, which is that model shoots should be professionally set up and conducted, to the mutual benefit of everyone concerned."I'll be talking about how to work with models, where to find them, how to approach them, and the best ways to handle the session," says Mike. "if you're just starting out I'll explain how, even if you have no experience and haven't yet built up a portfolio, you can still convince models to work with you. I'll also be covering the essential 'dos and don'ts,' and outlining the precautions you should take to ensure safe working practices for both them and you. It's absolutely crucial, especially if you've not worked in this area before, to start off on the right foot.

"Don't assume that everything will just be 'all right on the night' and that you're guaranteed a positive outcome: models will, quite rightly, feed back about you on the Internet, and if you don't get things right then everyone will quickly know about it. Worst of all, you could even end up on their 'sleaze/black list,' and that would effectively stop you ever being able to attract the models you want to work with."As a veteran of the Convention Mike has great experience of the huge variety of workshops and training on offer, and he's still hungry for more knowledge. Although he's seen them speak many times before, there's still one class act that he intends not to miss this time around: "I'll make sure to see the Yerburys if I possibly can," he says. "They are always good to see and always have something useful to pass on."With his first workshop on the horizon it will be a landmark Convention for Mike and he's relishing the prospect: after all these years he's still as enthusiastic about the business as he ever was, and it's this undiminished love for photography that he's be looking to pass on to his audience.
