"...I then moved on to trying to do a different shot in every situation that I was in..."
These days Jerry has scaled back on his weddings considerably, and instead of the 80-100 a year that he once regularly took on he's now down to around 20-25 and the rest of the time he's trying out new things or he's travelling the world teaching. He also married Melissa at the start of 2011 and, in true Ghionis style, he took on the task of covering at least some of his own ceremony himself.
"I actually had a dream about photographing Melissa, on our wedding day and also photographing the two of us together in a mirror," he says.
"Melissa also said when we first were engaged that she wanted me to take on the bride's coverage and photograph her on our wedding day. I have always taught that you need to shoot through the eyes of a loved one for more powerful images and emotive storytelling and, since I'm a photographer and I'm in love with her, there could be no better suited photographer than me.
"For the rest of the wedding, one of my best friends, Ryan Schembri, returned my favour to him. I photographed his wedding day years ago and last year he came and photographed the rest of mine, while my 12-year-old nephew, Zane, was a proud second shooter."
You could listen to Jerry for hours, so many great stories does he have to tell, and it's a coup for the Societies to have got him back to the Convention so soon. What is it about this event that just keeps him coming back? "I've made a lot of friends over the years with so many European photographers," he says. "The Societies' Convention offers a warm and fun environment where I can be amongst my peers and share ideas together." It should be quite a return and for those lucky enough to have tickets for the workshops it will be an experience to treasure.
