Ramon Sammut

Ramon was an early adopter of digital technology, experimenting with new ways of making images while digital photography was still in its infancy. This led Ramon to find a niche as one of the leading consultants on digital image making in Malta. "My main work is photographic lecturing," Ramon tells me when I ask how he spends most of his working week. "But I also do image editing, portraits, product photography and I build printer profiles too."

His reputation as an expert in 'the digital way' has meant that Ramon is always a popular speaker at the Convention and this year he is returning with a Masterclass on portrait post-production. "I'll be teaching a special workflow class for wedding and portrait photographers," says Ramon as we discuss the content of his Masterclass. "I'll be covering all kinds of issues that photographers face from skin retouching - including hot spot removal and advance make-up retouching techniques - to changing backgrounds."

But it's the section of the Masterclass where Ramon will be teachingdelegates about digital light enhancement that many will find the most exciting. "I'll talk about how to improve the lighting on a portrait. We'll discuss different types of lighting and I'll be supplying a PDF of notes to participating attendees. The techniques must be seen to be believed!"

When he's not working as an image consultant or teaching other photographers, Ramon exercises his trigger finger by shooting abstract art. I asked him why he had turned to abstract photography: "Sometimes my imagination just runs wild. I feel a sense of relief when I record my images in print." His speciality is in producing digital monochrome images that replicate analogue processes with a flavour of today's fashions, but can turn his hand to many styles.

Owning a print lab means that Ramon can control the whole process from concept to printing. His lab even offers high-end services such as large-format and bookbinding alongside its fine art print services and is one of the largest photo labs in Malta. This broad background of working practices combined with his studies in Malta, the UK and the States' means that Ramon is extremely well placed to teach Masterclasses in digital techniques and should be on any photographer's must-see list if they want to brush up on their editing techniques.
