What makes Maltese photography so vibrant? "Living on a small island is a factor that has sharpened the vision of a good number of local photographers," says Joe. "Add to this a good dose of Mediterranean passion and you have a proven formula for producing stunning images. All of this fits nicely within the Convention masterclass schedule as it contributes towards a healthy mix of commercial, inspiring, motivational and business-driven photography.
"Maltese photographers have also been winning awards with great consistency and all this exposure has added to our confidence and contributes to our stature in a big way. When all this happens in an environment where networking, education flow and friendship are the norm, then you have a win-win situation."
Another Maltese photographer who will be part of the party speaking this year is Charles Zammit, who runs the biggest studio in Malta and covers around 70-100 weddings a year. "I have been a member of the MIPP for around 13 years," he says, "and I've been with The Societies since they first came over to Malta to meet us. This is going to be my fifth time at the Convention and I can honestly say that it's an occasion no photographer should miss, because everyone can learn something by mixing with photographers from different countries and traditions. For me the first Convention I attended was a turning point in my career and that's how important it can be."
Kevin Casha is in full agreement with that sentiment. "Whoever attends the Convention is sure to take away a lot from it. First it's the experience of participating in such a big photographic event, plus of course there's the networking and contacts that one can take from this. Then it's the awareness of new equipment and technology that comes out of the trade show and, most of all, it's the learning experience you get from attending lectures and workshops from so many established photographers.
"As an extra bonus I can use the Convention as a scouting opportunity to find promising lecturers for our Malta seminars and Conventions, which we always do in collaboration with The Societies."
The Maltese connection grows stronger by the year and the spirit of cooperation has led to huge benefits on both sides. The 2012 Convention will see the ties bound more closely than ever, and it's an association that reflects the truly international appeal of this very special event.
