David is somewhat of an institution at The Societies' Convention. He's one of the cheerful faces you'll see around the venue directing people to lecture rooms, looking after classes and being helpful wherever he can. "The camaraderie at the Convention is amazing. There is just so much knowledge and everyone is very approachable,' says David when I ask him what he enjoys most about heading to London every year.

However, it's the sharing that really makes it worthwhile for him; "I just can't believe that all these people come together every year, tell everyone their business secrets and what they do to become successful. I cannot think of any other industry where that would happen and it's incredible to be a part of it."

As an active member of The Societies'

online forums, David gets involved in organising the tables for forum members at the annual awards night. In addition to corralling the forumites he also organises the David Routledge Memorial Award. "We very sadly lost David Routledge to cancr in 2012 so now we have an award in his name to remember him by. Every year David Routledge's wife Nicky presents the award to a photographer who has entered the competition via the forums. The criteria are very simple: you may only enter if you have not won a Gold Award with the SWPP and you have not yet achieved a qualification.

The David Routledge award is a great opportunity for those new to The Societies to get involved and potentially have their name called out at the awards night for them to pick up a trophy and kick-start their awards cabinet! Nicky's speech at the awards night is always a moving occasion, but it is wonderful to remember such a kind and active person as David Routledge, every year."

Wedding Workflow

Despite being a veteran attendee, this will be the first time that David has delivered his own Masterclass at the Convention. 'When I first visited The Societies'

Convention I found all these amazing classes where everyone was sharing their knowledge but I tended to struggle with discovering those willing to share their workflow knowledge with me. I personally want to save time once the photographs are downloaded back in the studio.' With that in mind he has designed his Masterclass for those novice and intermediate photographers who would like some pointers on speeding up their workflow. 'I'm going to cover downloading once back at the desk, selecting the images and editing them in Lightroom. I'll also be talking about presenting an online gallery to the client and then basic album design procedures including sending to a manufacturer.' If you're still finding your feet with wedding or event photography, this will be an invaluable class - especially if you feel like you're spending too much time chained to your desk rather than getting out shooting or relaxing!
