However, at the end of the day it all comes back to having good, solid foundations in photography. With his experience spanning the change from film to digital, I wanted to know if that had changed Paul's style of working. "I carried on with the same discipline when I went digital that I'd previously had with film," says Paul. "Even though I'm using state-of-the-art cameras and systems, I'm still shooting manually so I'm in control of the camera rather than the camera being in control of me."

The obvious change for a photographer though is in the post-processing and Paul does concede that digital gives you a large amount of flexibility after the wedding has been shot. "Some of the software packages that are available to a photographer are really quite interesting. They can help you reproduce techniques that you used in the darkroom but it's something that has to be used sparingly so that you don't overcook an image. Dodging and burning an image digitally to make it look like a handmade print is a real skill that can benefit any photographer's work."

But the often forgotten key to getting fabulous shots on the day of a wedding is cooperation from the couple. "You know within a few minutes of having a consultation with people if they are a couple that you'll enjoy working with," says Paul. "If the couple are right for you they'll appreciate what you are doing and can see the difference between you and other photographers. They will also give you plenty of time to take great photographs of them on the day." I'm sure that any wedding photographer will agree that a great couple who really do want to work with the photographer to make memorable images are the kind who's photographs will really stand out long after their wedding day is over.

At the Convention this year Paul will be delivering two classes and they will be unmissable if you're looking to improve your wedding photography. The first will be a Masterclass on the Friday where Paul will be going back to basics and giving an insight into many different styles of wedding photography.
