Learning about video
Video production can be a vital, and profitable, extra string to the bow for many professional photographers but because the opportunities offered by HD SLRs are so new, there are many out there who are struggling to cope with the technical demands of this medium and the gear they're going to need to get to grips with filming and audio requirements. The Convention, of course, is the perfect place to pick up background on new technology, and the Trade Show will be full of products that relate to the video arena and there will be plenty of salespeople there to show you their products and to give you the chance of a hands-on experience.
Richard's two workshops, due to be held on the Saturday and Sunday of the Convention, will dovetail perfectly with the opportunity the Trade Show offers, and the first of them will be a run through of DSLR filming and cinematic techniques while the second is more of the same but with handson training bolted on.
"I've attended the Convention for the past two years, speaking for Canon UK at the first and assisting Bev Downie in her seminar last year," says Richard. "Both years I also had my cinematography DSLR clips on loop at the Canon UK and The Trained Eye stands.
"This time round I will be covering everything the newcomer to HD SLR videography might need to know, from the basics of filming with a DSLR right through to cinematic equipment, shot/lens choice, editing, grading and workflows. I can imagine there will be lots of questions throughout, so I will answer these as I go along, with product demonstrations and visual clips to accompany my answers."
Topics covered will include looking at the thorny issue of HD SLRs vs dedicated Camcorders, Kit lists, Filming with DSLRs, Lens choices, Film addons for photographers, The cinematic look, Being unobtrusive, Storytelling, Lighting, Solo shoots vs Multi-crew, Getting high-end customers, Editing and Colour-grading, Output and delivery, and an extensive Q&A session. Everyone signing up for the sessions, which are £80 for members and £120 for nonmembers, also receives a free WedFilm Academy tutorial DVD to take away at the end, so it really is designed to be the perfect introduction for someone looking to check out exactly what this new area of the business has to offer them.
While he came into the business primarily as a videographer,. Richard has found that the recent convergence with DSLRs has sparked an interest in still photography, and he became a member of The Societies last April. "Another part of the reason for joining was that I also really enjoy the Convention," he says. "I love to see and try out new products and cameras at the Trade Show each year, as well as having the opportunity to network with familiar faces that I've spoken to on the Society forums and on Twitter. It's a great chance to take a look at everything that's going on and to make sure that I'm up to speed with a fast-moving business."
Richard is also lining his list of speakers to go and see. "I'll definitely take the chance to go and take part in some of the amazing workshops that are taking place throughout the week," he says, "but at the moment I'm spoilt for choice. There are lots that I can learn from, and it's just a question of planning my time to get the most out of the event!"
