The nature and wildlife exhibitions were both abundant and impressive.
The Glanzlichter Nature Photography Contest is the biggest German nature photography contest, and has been conducted every year since 1999. Cash and non-cash prizes valued at over €26,000 were awarded in eight different categories. A total of 16,334 pictures were submitted to 'Glanzlichter 2012' by 1,099 photographers from 32 countries.
'Heartbeat of Nature', a cooperation between photokina - World of Imaging and the Zingst photography 'world of experience' organised the Heartbeat of Nature online photography contest. The results are images that touch the heart. The central theme was to make the conservation of biodiversity something that could be experienced visually, an aim assisted by Epson who looked after all the printing. By the submissions deadline, over 12,000 entries had been registered. The exhibition showed the 100 best works from the competition. The awards ceremony and the distribution of non-cash prizes (including a VOLKSWAGEN up!) took place during photokina.
GDT(Gesellschaft Deutscher Tierfotografen) organised the European Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2012 show. The goal of the contest is twofold: to display the high quality and characteristic style of European wildlife photographers by presenting outstanding pictures from Europe and around the world, and to encourage nature conservation awareness through the medium of photography. Treating nature with sensitivity and care is of paramount importance here, as is image authenticity. Works coud be submitted in eight broad categories, from portraits, behavioural studies and action scenes to critical portrayals of the way we treat the environment and experimental photography.
