Self employed Tax explained - Travel expenses to the 2012 Convention - part 2 of 1 2

Published 01/12/2011

However, if your trip to the Convention is outside your normal working pattern, and I would suggest it is, then HMRC will allow reasonable accommodation and food costs to be claimed.

Therefore if you are planning on staying overnight to visit The Societies Convention, the cost of the accommodation can be claimed (as long as it is not close to a regular place of work). What's more, reasonable subsistence, evening meals and breakfast, can be claimed also. Be warned though, HMRC do not allow for the costs of alcoholic drinks to be reclaimed!

Although I've tried to condense travel expenses into a brief column, it can only be a flavour of the topic. There are too many variables to summarise accurately.

Accountancy firms like ours specialise in looking at individual cases, and it may be the best way to save some money.

If you have any other travel expense questions, possibly relating to car expenses please call us free on 0800 093 9433.

If you are attending this year's Convention we have a £99 + VAT show offer for new clients, so please come and visit us at stand 172.
