Simon's style has developed over the 30 years that he's been working as a photographer, but it's rooted in his love of art and painting. "I love the surrealist painters as well as anything a bit quirky and unusual, I like to try to see things in a different way." I asked Simon how he goes about trying to make his work look different to everyone else, "I always look for a slightly different twist on things. I try not to get my inspiration from magazines or other photographers, I'd prefer to go walking in the countryside, listen to some music or go to art galleries to see exhibitions."
Inspiration can strike at any time and a trip to the David Bailey exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery set Simon off on an exploration of light.
"There was a shot in the Bailey exhibition that had coloured shadows which reminded me of the Degas paintings of ballerinas - when you look at the shadows they have all kinds of colours in them. So I went away and I experimented to see if I could get a similar look."
