How do you stay ahead of the game?
I like to concentrate on what I think is going to work for my business. I stay connected to the industry and read about what's new and what's working for people, but I also like to do what I think will work for me and my clients.
How do organisations like The Societies helps?
The Societies help people to connect with others. It helps us to grow and learn in a group environment. To me there's no comparison to learning from people who have walked the same walk that you are now. in with a chance. I've yet to win an annual award but I was still excited to know I'd come so close.
Why is The Convention such a big deal for photographers?
The Convention is something that everyone should strive to attend. It's about connecting with other photographers. When I go to these conventions I leave with information that I know is going to benefit my business and with relationships that I know will last.
Your own mentors (living and dead)
Chris Becker has been an amazing person that I really look up to. His philosophy on photographers helping other photographers has been the biggest influence in my own career and business outlook.
Simon Revill, a UK-based wedding photographer, is the one person who pushes me to be a better photographer. He tells me like it is and has been a great sounding board and inspiration for business. I think it's so important to find that one person who is totally honest with you about your work and helps you grow.
If you could pick just FIVE seminars to attend at the The Convention: whose workshops would you attend?
Christopher Becker. He has so much great information to share on the client experience and how that can help your business. Khara Plicanic; I hear she's a superstar using InDesign and I want to learn more about her process.
Gordon McGowan. I want to attend his Background Pose Expression The Sequel 2011 masterclass. Joe Photo's Designing for Profit masterclass, as I want to step up my albums this year. Finally, Michael and Pamela Ayers' Entering Prints and Judging Competition superclass. It's a goal of mine for 2011, to enter at least one print competition.
Your plans for the next five years?
I'd love to grow my destination weddings and really develop my local business. I'm still on the search for that perfect studio space and I'd like to find it, and get it established. I'd also like to continue speaking to and helping out other photographers... and maybe have the baby girl I've been wanting for so long.
