In one of the tougher assignments of the year, Tom Lee represented Professional Imagemaker at the recent launch of the Nikon D200 in Marakesh. As well as enduring the pleasures of wobbling eastern flesh they had to run about the desert pretending to be photographers in the burning heat of the day and drink alcohol at night to revive their flagging spirits! On a more serious note everybody was well impressed with the new Nikon baby which is bound to be a hit with the social sector. Intended to fill the gap between the D70s and the D2x there are plenty of pixels at 10.2 million, continuous shooting at 5fps and many of the D2x features built in. The massive 2.5inch LCD screen will be a boon for quick image previews, the quality is outstanding. Flash is synched at 1/250th and there is a synch socket for studio use ( hitched up to an SB 800 gun you can do wonderous deeds). The magnesium alloy body is equipped with plenty of seals, so the camera is robust enough for professional use. Price point is around £1300 inclusive of VAT and the official launch date is 15 December - put one on your Christmas list! www.nikon.co.uk
