But by manipulating the way she turns her head and where she looks, we can control the lighting pattern on the face which is ultimately what determines how the picture looks. So you have to be able to recognise the prevailing direction of ambient light, use the environment to control it if possible, and then manipulate the subject because you can't move the light - that's the bottom line.
And this is what I'm always talking about when I say, 'Do you want to be a picture maker or a picture taker?' Because if you're just going out on a sunny day and shooting regardless, you're just taking pictures. If you want to actually make pictures, you need this understanding of how light works.
And whenever I teach these streetwalk workshops I'm always blown away that this is knowledge most photographers don't possess. And that's not your fault - it's the industry's fault - but come on a workshop and we'll put it right.
