Did it take you long to establish your name and brand?
No, not really, I feel I've been very lucky with clients spreading the word about my work. That said, it didn't happen overnight, it evolved off the back of a lot of hard work and training.
How do you attract clients and what market do youtarget?
To be honest, I could be classed as a useless at marketing, I think it's something many of us photographers struggle with. However, I firmly believe that people buy people, so almost all my clients have come to me by word of mouth, some via my website too, which has a good Google ranking. So I guess I can't be that useless! It is scary though, as every month I think the work is going to dry up, then I get so busy that it's crazy. I would get easily bored focusing on a single genre of photography, so whilst I mainly shoot portraits and weddings, I've also diversified into commercial, bands, artists and products.
Do you manage your own website, SEO, marketing, social media presence and PR or do you pay others for this part of the business?
I manage my own website and have been fairly active in getting a presence on the web through, Facebook, Twitter and Blogger, linking them all together to save me time.
What do you mean by linking them all together?
By connecting them, so that if I post on my Facebook business page it will automatically tweet and blog it at the same time. So it keeps all my social media sites very active.
What percentage of your time is spent creating images versus time spent on business administration and marketing?
Gosh, probably only 10% of my time is spent behind the camera. Most of my time goes into administration, marketing and social media to ensure the business thrives.
If you could start your business again from day one, what would you do differently - if anything ?
I don't think I'd do anything differently. I'm happy with my achievements to date.
