It just works except when it doesn't!

Away teaching at Epson Print Academy, I turned the machine on in the hotel room and was instantly connected via the local wifi. An email was sent and reported as being sent but actually failed to arrive. Google seems to be the culprit but others have reported issues.

Transport

With the intention of carrying the thing around quite a lot, we invested in a soft, shoulder bag from The Flight Case Company. This holds the body of the iMac securely and there is a front flap pocket for the keyboard, mouse and leads. At a push you could cart this lot across London although you might be a little unpopular on a rush hour tube as it sticks out quite a bit. We also found the straps a little long, holding the handles allowed the bottom to drag on the floor and the shoulder sling left it crashing into the knees (although your editor is, of course, right at the short end of the spectrum!).

Overall

It is easy to see why the status conscious Mac Monkey is so enamoured with their stylish kit and it certainly lacks nothing in performance speed and ease of use. The issue with the restricted gamut of the iMac screen remains a barrier to their use for real design work and we wonder how this predominantly Mac community manages to get along when their output is intended for press. Despite all of this, your editor is more impressed than he expected to be, although the iMac will not be pushing the Windows work-station over just yet, it is far too limited in terms of storage, DVD output, USB porting and monitor porting to make the grade for magazine design work. Complete with its carrier case it represents a better option than a Macbook Pro for lecturing, providing you have car transport to your venue and space on the lectern.
