Tell us a little about your background, your first camera and photographic experience and your subsequent emergence as a pro.
I always had an interest in buildings since I was a small boy and when I started in photography as a general photo assistant then a three year PQE photography course at the famous Blackpool Photography college ,plus a extra year out in Industry. I quickly discovered I liked being out on location rather than in a studio .When I was a student a went to a seminar with George Tanner a very famous interior photographer who had trained under John Maltby and when how saw how he lit up interiors I was captivated and was inspired to become a architectural interior photographer.
My first still camera was a Minolta XG9 35mm SLR but I saved for a whole year and then bought my first Hasselblad 500cm which I still have, I have used Hasselblad cameras throughout my career to this day.
It was what I always wanted to do from being a small boy. I consider myself so lucky to be in photography my passion is my work .
Film or digital? Is there still a place for silver halide?
I am very much from the era of film and in my case 4x5 inch transparency film so look to get the most out of the space capturing within camera .how to use flash lighting to add detail ,drama ,and depth to the shot how we can use light to make a 2 d image look 3 d. Particularly with interior photography light is the key coupled with strong viewpoints to make the imagery stand out. So yes film or digital for me the techniques are very similar for me. For fun film can be great, in the commercial world the client may take some persuading. Also the Quality that I now get from digital is absolutely outstanding
Which camera?
My camera now is Hasselblad H6D100C used with Hasselblad lenses. The H6 D 100C is a modular camera so I take the digital back off and put it on my Linhof Techno with Rodenstock Lenses to give me the full range of camera movements
Bit of detail about your own studio set-up/staffing. Why (as a customer) would I choose you?
I am basically a one man band ,use freelance assistants and producers when I need them. Being a location photographer I work from home my office and studio store a building in my garden.
Hopefully because of the standard of my photography, my experience in photographing architecture ,interiors and corporate photography in many different locations and situations. In making my clients spaces look better than they remember them.
